Simon Thompson is the super suave Retail and Hospitality Director of Fortnum and Mason, the official grocer to the Queen. Preserving the heritage of the original greengrocer’s, while continuing to keep up with the times is exactly what he does best. Here he shares his top tips for travel.

1: Do you have any packing tips?

Pack light by working to a capsule wardrobe and always leave room – inevitably I shop whilst away.

2: If you were stranded with only one outfit what would it be?

A linen two-piece suit by my tailor Nicholas Oliver.

3: A destination that surprised you?

Mitch Tonks recommended Galicia to me.  We loved the nine mile deserted beaches and had great food.

4: Favourite hotel?

The Carlyle.  It was the first serious hotel I stayed in so has great memories, and their attention to detail is impeccable.  They always manage to surprise me every time I return.

5: Most romantic destination?

Dartmoor. If my wife had her way we’d be living there on a farm.

6: Is there anywhere that you are still yearning to visit?

New Zealand sounds and looks utterly beautiful and unspoilt. I’d visit via Australia but New Zealand would be the aim.

7: What’s your essential Otis Batterbee travel kit?

An Otis Batterbee Wash Bag and the Prince of Wales check Eye Mask.
